Denver DA motions to revoke ex-APS Dep. Superintendent’s bond; was notified he’d illegally left state by news reports
A Denver district attorney on Monday signed a motion to revoke bond for Timothy “Jason” Martinez, the Albuquerque Public Schools Deputy Superintendent who resigned last Thursday, in relation to his 2013 sexual assault on children charges.
A judge has yet to sign the motion, which was filed at 3 p.m. Monday. The Denver District Attorney’s Office said it is looking for a judge to sign the motion, after which a warrant would be issued for Martinez’s arrest. Continue reading
Resigned APS Deputy Superintendent faces 6 child sex charges, never completed background check
Former Albuquerque Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Jason Martinez, who resigned from APS Thursday two months into his tenure, faces six child sexual assault charges in Colorado and did not complete a required APS background check before his resignation.
Martinez is set for a pretrial hearing in Denver Oct. 2 and a jury trial Oct. 9 on the charges. He was arrested in July 2013. Continue reading
APD officers will stand trial for murder in shooting of James Boyd
Judge Neil Candelaria on Tuesday ruled there is probable cause for two Albuquerque police officers to stand trial in the 2014 shooting death of a homeless man.
Retired officer Keith Sandy and officer Dominique Perez will face charges of 2nd-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and battery in court. The officers fatally shot James Boyd during a standoff in the foothills. They will be arraigned and likely booked at some point. Continue reading
18-year-old son of state representative arrested in shooting death of Jaydon Chavez-Silver
Albuquerque police arrested an 18-year-old Albuquerque man who is the son of a state representative late Friday for the murder of 17-year-old Jaydon Chavez-Silver the night of June 26.
Donovan Maez was arrested on outstanding warrants for possession of a counterfeit controlled substance with intent to distribute and auto burglary. Continue reading
EPA holds public hearing in Farmington on mine spill; existing closures and non-use orders expected for at least another week
The Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday it does not anticipate reopening any waterways affected by the Gold King Mine waste spill in northwest New Mexico and southern Colorado until at least Aug. 17, and said people in the area should continue to follow existing closures to the Animas and San Juan rivers.
The agency said it has deployed response teams to Durango and Silverton, Colorado, as well as northwest New Mexico and the Navajo Nation. Continue reading
NM Gov. Martinez declares state of emergency following gold mine waste spill
New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez declared a state of emergency Monday to free up more state money to help communities surrounding the Animas River affected by an EPA-caused waste spill that happened Aug. 5 at a mining site near Silverton, Colorado.
Gov. Martinez’s order frees up $750,000 in additional state funds that will be used to test wells, study potential effects of the spill, support a multiagency response team in the area and fund further efforts. Continue reading

A dispatch worker for the Albuquerque Fire Department has been removed from the dispatch center and placed on administrative assignment after hanging up on a 911 caller who was trying to get paramedics to the scene in which Jaydon Chavez-Silver was shot and killed. Continue reading
Wife: Former CNN reporter shoots, kills armed robber at Westside motel
A former CNN investigative reporter shot and killed an armed robber in a motel on Albuquerque’s Westside late Tuesday, according to his wife.
Police responded to the Motel 6 at Iliff Road NW off Coors around 11:30 p.m. APD said they found a man dead in the parking lot with at least one gunshot wound.
Lynne Russell, also a former CNN anchor, told KOB she and her husband, Chuck de Caro, decided to stop at the motel for the night because they were tired after a long day of traveling and had their dog with them. When she went out to the car to get something and returned to the room, she said an armed man was at the door with a handgun. Continue reading
Begaye wins Navajo Nation presidential election
Russell Begaye will be the new president of the Navajo Nation, according to unofficial election results that show Begaye drew more than 10,000 more votes than his counterpart, Joe Shirley, Jr.
Jonathan Nez, a three-time Navajo Nation Council delegate, will serve as Begaye’s vice president. Continue reading
Navajo President, Speaker: Supreme Court ‘overstepping authority’ by ordering April election
Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly and Council Speaker LoRenzo Bates issued a statement late Tuesday condemning the Navajo Nation Supreme Court’s order requiring the presidential election to be held April 21 and say the court is “overstepping its authority” and “displays a lack of respect for the authorities of [the] Nation’s three-branch government,” further exposing the rift between different factions of the Navajo government.
The Supreme Court on March 20 called for the election to take place April 21 and that the Acting Controller transfer $317,000 to the Navajo Election Administration for the election. Continue reading
