Brauchler says he’ll bring Aurora shooter James Holmes back to Colorado if elected governor
DENVER – George Brauchler says he’ll bring Aurora theater shooter James Holmes back to Colorado to serve his sentence if Colorado elects him as its next governor in 2018.
“As governor, I will return Aurora Theater Shooting mass murderer back to CO to serve his sentence here, where he committed his evil crime,” Brauchler tweeted early Friday.
The Republican is also the 18th Judicial District Attorney who prosecuted Holmes’ murder case.
It’s currently unknown where Holmes is imprisoned, as he was moved out of the San Carlos Correctional Facility in Pueblo sometime in late 2015 or early 2016 after he was attacked by another prisoner.
Holmes had been at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City before he was moved to Pueblo, and was often in solitary confinement.
Authorities have only said Holmes was moved to either a federal prison or another state prison out of state.
Brauchler had pushed for the death penalty in Holmes’ case, but the jury couldn’t unanimously decide that Holmes should be sentenced to death.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has said he won’t sign off on any executions while he’s in office, and Brauchler has made it a point over the past year that he would like to bring the death penalty back to Colorado if he’s elected governor.
Brauchler pressed Hickenlooper Friday morning as well.
“[Hickenlooper] can do one important thing for victims: tell them where the shooter is,” he tweeted.
Thursday marked the 5-year anniversary of the theater shooting, which left 12 people dead and 70 others injured.
