Gov. Martinez: Top advisor, others have ‘done nothing wrong’

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez told reporters Monday afternoon the FBI has interviewed her and others regarding an investigation into her top political advisor, Jay McCleskey, and allegations of fundraising violations.

“I’m confident that neither Jay nor anyone else has done anything wrong,” Gov. Martinez said. “And if they can’t beat him, they’re just going to smear him.”

Gov. Martinez told The Associated Press earlier Monday she was aware of complaints. Her comments came days after the Santa Fe New Mexican reported the FBI has interviewed state Republicans about McCleskey and Martinez’s fundraising.

Gov. Martinez claimed Monday afternoon the investigations tie back to the Jamie Estrada case. Estrada was charged in May 2013 and sentenced in Oct. 2014 for the “unlawful interception” of emails from Gov. Martinez’s political action committee, then lied about it.

“These are claims that have gone back two years to the Jamie Estrada case,” she said. “Same people, same thing – it’s disappointing they keep doing it over and over again.”

“I’m telling you, this is nothing new. It’s the same old people who have an ax to grind, and when you have an ax to grind and nothing new, you keep repeating yourself hoping that somebody’s going to listen,” Martinez continued. “They haven’t yet; nothing has ever come of this.”

Martinez has called the accusations of an investigation “political cheap shots.”
